How Digital Satellite Broadcasting Is Bringing Continual Change
Digital satellite broadcasts have changed forever the way that TV is viewed in countries all across the world. For decades, all that was available on television, no matter where you lived, was the fare produced by the national state broadcaster, or by huge media conglomerates who tailored their broadcasting to fit in with the needs of commercial advertisers. Satellite and cable TV was the start of a major revolution which has increased the choice available to so many people. This has been continued by digital technology, and then by online broadcasting.
The number of channels available to the public has been increased by digital satellite technology because of bandwidth considerations on the major satellites. A digital TV station will use only a fraction of the bandwidth needed by an analog one. This extra capacity is being used mainly to provide extra channels, although consideration is also given to improving quality. This has been necessary because of the competition being given to digital satellite by the alternative of cable. Cable TV is of a guaranteed standard, while a satellite installation can vary according to the equipment used and the precision with which it is installed.
As well as making sure that the dish is installed as accurately as possible, and that it is properly secured against drift, you also need to make sure that you get the right digital satellite receiver. Any modern receiver should be good enough to pick up the standard broadcasts of the major networks, as they have made it as easy as possible for this to happen. Just make sure that you have a receiver which picks up the correct band of frequencies, if you are buying one yourself.
You can also pick up digital satellite signals using a computer, if you have it connected in place of a TV tuner with the right TV tuner card. This gives you the easiest possible option of recording and even archiving the programs. The same ease of recording can be achieved with a dedicated digital satellite receiver, if you get one with a hard disk built in. These make the job of watching and recording television as easy as possible, but they have no archiving facility. You will need to combine them with an external hard disk or DVD system.
The future of digital satellite broadcasts is likely to be a continuation of the present trend. There is unlikely to be any great move towards small independent broadcasters, as has been predicted, simply because it is so cheap and easy to set up a TV station and broadcast over the Internet. There is no incentive to use digital satellite technology unless you are a company of reasonable size looking to attract a mass audience. The media conglomerates who dominated terrestrial broadcasting have moved into satellite, and look set to dominate the channels being broadcast on digital satellite.
